An AI wrapper is an application built primarily as a thin layer over an existing artificial intelligence model —usually accessed via API, such as those from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google— without providing technical differentiation or significant proprietary data. In essence, it takes the user's request, forwards it to the underlying model, and returns the response, sometimes with a nicer interface or a pre-designed prompt.
The term is often used with a critical connotation in contexts of strategy and governance, because it questions the sustainability of the product: if all the value depends on an external provider, the company remains exposed to several risks:
- Dependency on the pricing and terms of the underlying model.
- Low barrier to entry, easily replicable by competitors.
- Risk of obsolescence if the provider itself launches the same feature.
The important nuance is that not every wrapper lacks value. A layer that adds proprietary data, specific integrations, quality control, regulatory compliance, or relevant user experience ceases to be a mere wrapper and becomes a defensible product.
